A reporting pack is only as good as its definitions.
Five checks before you automate the monthly story.
Start with the decision
Name the decision the report supports, who owns it, and when it has to be made. A beautiful pack that arrives after the decision is a record of missed timing.
Give each metric a definition
Write the formula, source, reporting period, owner, and exclusions beside each material metric. Decide how credits, late entries, and currency changes are handled. A shared label does not establish a shared calculation.
Reconcile before you explain
Compare the output with its source totals. Keep an exception register with a named reviewer. A plausible narrative cannot repair an unexplained difference.
Make changes visible
Preserve the approved prior version and identify what changed, why, and who approved the change. Version control is part of the reporting process, even when the output is a spreadsheet.
Automate the stable parts first
Begin with a repeatable collection or validation step. Run it alongside the existing process, review the exceptions, and define the conditions for release. Keep judgment and approval with the accountable person.
